What Your Lawn Needs This April

Updated: Apr 2

Spring is in full swing! We're going to start spending more time in the yard, but your lawn may need some TLC first. So, let's go over a few things to keep in mind this month when maintaining your lawn.

Fertilization & Weed Control

If you have tall and thick weeds in your lawn you may never find some of those easter eggs you hid all over the yard. Let's get them taken care of before they become an issue.

How Should My Weeds Be Treated This Month?

March through early April: If you have Bermuda, Zoysia, or Ceniped grass you will need a post-emergent herbicide to kill any broad-leaf weeds. This treatment should be applied to the entire yard to ensure all winter weeds will die off. Along with this, you will also need a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent any spring weeds from germinating. It's now time to add fertilizer to your treatment. Fertilizer will help promote full grass while the lawn begins to grow again. If you have Fescue grass, your yard will also need these two treatments along with a balanced fertilizer to promote a lush lawn and strong roots. Typically this treatment is done in March through early April.

Late April through May: If you have Bermuda, Zoysia, or Ceniped grass you may need a post-emergent herbicide to spot-spray any stubborn broad-leaf weeds that haven't dyed off yet from last month's treatment. Along with this, you will also need a balanced fertilizer. Fertilizer will help promote full grass while the lawn is growing this month. If you have Fescue grass, your yard will also need a post-emergent herbicide to spot-spray any broad-leaf weeds. Then you'll need a balanced slow-release fertilizer to help prepare your lawn for the hotter months ahead. Typically this treatment is done in late April through May.

Key Tips:

When treating the lawn it is beneficial to take 5-6 weeks in between treatments to give the weeds time to die, allow fertilizer to reach the soil, and eliminate the risk of burning the lawn

Some weeds can be more stubborn than others. It may be beneficial to switch to a more special weed control rather than adding more chemicals to the lawn or seek out professional help.

Make sure to use a kid and pet-friendly weed control when spraying the lawn especially if you live in a neighborhood.

Treating weeds is not a one-time solution. The more you maintain these weeds, the easier it will be to treat them. At Total Lawn Care we have formulated a 9-step service with high-quality kid and pet-friendly formulas for a more efficient way to take care of fertilization and weed control. Each step created is to maintain weeds year round and fertilize to promote healthy full grass.

Bi-Weekly Mowing

This month you'll be seeing a lot more green in your lawn! It is recommended to mow your lawn every other week in the spring.

To get the green lawn look you desire, it's important to scalp the lawn if you have Bermuda grass. Scalping is a process of mowing the lawn shorter than normal to cut off the brown dormant grass. By cutting the grass shorter, it will allow more sunlight into the soil and promote healthier & thicker grass. After scalping it's a great time to fertilize the lawn. It's important to note that cutting too short will expose soil and lead to negative effects. Scalping the lawn is recommended to be done in March, but if you haven't done this to your lawn yet it's not too late.

After scalping the lawn (if you have Bermuda grass) it is recommended to cut the lawn bi-weekly. During this time it is also recommended to cut the lawn at the following heights:

  • Bermuda 1.5 inches

  • Zoysia 2 inches

  • Fescue 3 inches
